Roof Leaks are most likely coming from one of three places: the flashing, chimney or skylights.

Regardless of where the leak is coming from, there are certain steps that can be taken before calling a professional roofing company.

First off, make sure to identify the source of the leak by checking all areas of your home for signs of water damage. If there is evidence that it’s coming through a skylight or chimney then focus on those two locations first as they’re more difficult to repair without an experienced professional.

When inspecting for leakage, look closely at the joints of your home. Leaks can start with a small crack or hole in your shingles which eventually causes water to seep into different areas of your roof. If you suspect that it’s coming through where two pieces of shingle meet then replace the nails (or screws) with ones that are longer and bigger than usual to prevent future damage. If there is any evidence of rot or decay then you’ll need to pull out each shingle within eight inches on either side of the compromised one so that the entire damaged area is patched up.

If this step doesn’t solve your leaky roof issue, it may be time for a full replacement. Luckily, if you’ve done your homework and discovered the source of the leak before it’s too late, you’ll only need to replace those sections as opposed to having a complete tear-off. If your roof is more than twenty years old then we recommend that you start planning for a replacement sooner rather than later — soon enough you won’t have any choice but to go through with it.

Another thing to keep in mind is how much sun and heat exposure your roof gets throughout the year. A good example of this would be valley roofs which are very popular in Tucson, Arizona where there is plenty of sunshine and heat radiating from all sides. Because of this there is a higher frequency of damage because shingles experience such extreme levels of ultraviolet radiation, so pay closer attention if you live in an area like this.
